The Catahoula dog is a medium to large herding dog breed from the United States whose short, smooth coat comes in an array of eye-catching, beautful colors and patterns. A characteristic of the Catahoula is distinctive blue eyes and a spotted coat similar to a leopard pattern—hence the breed's name. These dogs are typically serious about their work—whether farm work or hunting—and are great companions with their families. They need an owner who is firm.

History of the Catahoula Leopard Dog
Opinions vary on the actual origin of the Catahoula Leopard dog. One theory is the domesticated dogs of Native Americans interbred with dogs that Spanish explorers brought to North America. Some likely breeds in the mix include bloodhounds, greyhounds, and mastiffs. The resulting dogs were bred with the hounds that accompanied French immigrants who arrived in Louisiana in the 1700s. The Beauceron, a French herding breed, is considered part of the Catahoula Leopard dog's ancestry.

Catahoula Leopard dogs need lots of exercise and mental stimulation to be happy and well-behaved at home. This breed is prone to getting destructive if they don't get their energy out constructively. Therefore, provide at least two hours of daily activity through walks, running, cycling, playing, swimming, hiking, and vigorous playtime. A Catahou's grooming needs are relatively straightforward. The short coat requires weekly brushing to remove loose fur and dirt and to disperse skin oils. Plan on a bath roughly every month, depending on how dirty your dog gets.
