Review: What Is Expedia and Who Is It For?

This article will be a review of Expedia.  We will touch on some of the pros and consWe all love a good hotel stay where we can enjoy a seamless booking process, a warm welcome during check-in, comfortable robes, and excellent customer service.  That makes us feel like we're on vacation, even if we're taking a staycation.

However, there are times when booking problems, unfavorable cancellation policies, or a subpar room can ruin our entire trip, especially after you have taken the time to research and plan.  That's why we wanted to guide you through the hotel booking process on Expedia.  From start to finish, covering everything from selecting the right property, on-site facilities, cancellation policies, and the overall experience at the hotel.

Expedia Review: A Comprehensive Look at Booking Your Next Vacation Booking

Although each property and destination may differ, the booking process on Expedia is relatively easy, with hotel descriptions and amenities that are easy to read and a reward points system that we'll discuss later.  Keep reading for a real-time Expedia review, and get ready to book your next hotel, whether abroad or for a staycation, just like we did.

Expedia offers more than just deals.  It has many search filters that simplify finding your ideal vacation.  It also makes purchasing travel insurance easy, which is crucial in today's world.  Additionally, the Expedia Rewards program lets you earn points you can redeem for future bookings.  However, booking through an online travel agency (OTA) like Expedia does have its downsides.

Pros and Cons Of Expedia

What is Expedia?  The short answer is Expedia is an online booking platform that caters to any traveler.  It offers a wide range of options to book hotels, vacation packages, flights, car rentals, cruises, and experiences at your destination.  In this review, we will focus on booking a hotel on Expedia, but the possibilities are endless, and there is something for everyone.

You can use Expedia for luxurious travel packages that include all-inclusive resorts, fancy cars, cruises, pet-friendly hotels, and budget-friendly hotels and flights.  To use the service, all you need is an email address to sign up, and then you can choose to use the website or download the mobile app for easy access while on the go.  Expedia sales and last-minute deals are excellent and may be cheaper than booking directly.

Review: When It Comes To Prices On Expedia

Expedia Offers frequent sales, last-minute travel deals and bundle discounts

Expedia offers various deals, such as bundling discounts and sales. Bundling is a popular booking method where you can save more by booking multiple products in a single transaction, such as a hotel and flight or a hotel and attraction ticket. For example, if you book a hotel and rental car in California for five days, you may receive up to three free rental car days or one free night with different options.

Pro Note:  One of the benefits of booking travel through Expedia is the ability to select your hotel, car rental, and airfare in separate steps during the booking process. This feature makes it convenient to bookmark the page and compare the costs of each of these items on Expedia with those on the company's direct website.

A tip is that you can select your hotel, airfare, and car rental separately on Expedia, making it easy to compare prices with the company's direct website and bookmark the page.

Expedia payment plans:  If you don't want to pay for your entire trip when booking, Expedia provides payment plans through Affirm.  Affirm is a service that offers short-term loans for online purchases. You should also check Expedia's Deals page and Last-Minute Deals page, which offer a variety of travel deals.  The deals range from budget motels to luxurious resorts, with discounts as high as 70% off.

Expedia Flights

Booking Flights Through Expedia

Looking for flights can be a nightmare for travelers, as there are hundreds of airlines to choose from, and prices constantly change.  Expedia has created a dedicated page for flight bookings to make things easier.  In many cases, Expedia can offer flight tickets at a cheaper price than the airline.  Because third-party services often get a bulk discount, they can sell their flight deals for less than the average ticket prices.  However, the big caveat is that this isn't always the case.

To book a flight, visit the Flight section of the website and enter your origin, destination, and travel dates, just like any other onlne booking website.  Expedia will then provide you with results from over 400 airlines.  If you have a preferred airline, you can filter the results to show only your top choices and your preferences.  This applies to direct or layover flights, flight times, baggage restrictions, and seat selection.

Compare Prices On Expedia

If you want to compare prices and find the best deal, Expedia's price tracking feature is perfect for you.  It uses AI technology to predict the best time to book your flight and notifies you when prices drop.  The best part of using Expedia for flight bookings is that you can browse, book, and pay for your trip all in one place.  You don't need to switch tabs or lose your booking while comparing prices on other websites.

Pro Note: Always compare prices between Expedia and the airline website to verify if the ticket is cheaper.

Expedia Hotels Review

Expedia Online Hotels Booking

Before you embark on your journey, it is essential to ensure that you have a place to stay upon arrival. You can head to the Stays section of the Expedia website and start browsing hotels, which is similar to booking a flight.

Once you enter your destination, you can use different filters to sort the options by:

  • star rating
  • guest rating
  • amenities
  • accessibility
  • family-friendliness
  • dog-friendly

and business-friendliness if you are going on a work trip.

If you want to stay like a VIP,  you can sign up and become a very important traveler with Expedia. Properties marked as “VIP Access” offer exceptional ratings and additional perks the more you book with Expedia. You will receive your booking confirmation code via email from Expedia once you book a hotel.

Expedia will notify the hotel of your booking for a seamless check-in. For added assurance, you can also call the hotel directly and confirm your stay using the confirmation codes provided in the email.

Car Rentals

Expedia Com Reviews

Are you going to need a car rental upon arrival? You can book your car rental through Expedia, which is equally user-friendly.  Expedia offers a filter to apply AARP rates and other discount codes. You can select the same pick-up and drop-off location.  Alternatively, you can choose different places or mix and match if you change your plan for a road trip

Once you use the Expedia service, you can view the actual car available for rent.  At your chosen location, date, and time. Their extensive car fleet includes various sizes, makes, and models. From compact and economy cars to mid-sized, standard, luxury, convertibles, and more. You can also sort by your preferred rental company, including Hertz, Alamo, and Avis among others.

Travel Insurance Through Expedia

Does Expedia offer travel insurance?

Traveling can be a lot of fun, but staying safe and prepared is always important. One way to do that is by getting travel insurance. When you're booking a hotel, flight, or car rental, you'll often be given the option to add travel insurance. The insurance cost will depend on what you're booking and where you're going. Before you make your booking, you'll be able to see how much the insurance will cost.  Then you can decide whether or not you want to buy it.

It's important to remember that travel insurance policies cover different things. Some policies will cover lost baggage, while others might cover medical emergencies. To ensure you're getting the coverage you need, it's a good idea to read the policy's fine print carefully before purchasing. That way, you can make an informed decision about which policy is right for you.

Expedia 24-Hour Policy

If you book a flight through Expedia, you can cancel the booking and receive a full refund within 24 hours of making the reservation. This is in accordance with the U.S. Department of Transportation regulations, which require airlines to allow you to cancel a flight for a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of booking. Plus, you booked the flight at least seven days before the scheduled departure.

Regarding Expedia's cancellation policy

Expedia offers some fully refundable options

Pros and Cons Of Expedia

Different airlines, hotels, and other travel services have distinct policies on Expedia, which means that change and cancellation policies can vary significantly. It can be challenging to understand the policies for each property, but you can use Expedia's “fully refundable” search filter to limit your search to flexible bookings.

Emergencies and accidents can happen anytime, so Expedia offers many properties and bookings with generous cancellation policies. However, it's important to note that these policies vary depending on the location and property. To avoid any issues, when looking for a hotel, you should use the “free cancellation” or “no change fee” filters to ensure you can alter or cancel your trip without hassle.

It is essential to read the fine print for flights as most flights are fully refundable if canceled within a specific timeframe, usually within 24 hours. If you need to change or cancel your flight due to COVID-19, you still have options for refunds or flight credits, but it's best to contact Expedia to know your options.

You can use the Expedia service page to make changes and request a refund for simple requests. If you need help using the self-service tools, contact Expedia through live chat, a dedicated Twitter account (@expediahelp), or phone.

Our review of Expedia.com hotel booking

While we have used Expedia for travel to the Dominican Republic, Atlantis in the Bahamas, staycations, Mexico, and more, we visited the ultimate vacation spot, New York (NYC).  We chose to make this booking to NYC on Expedia.  We decided to stay in the city for several nights, booking at the highly-rated Soho hotel — The Dominick.

We wanted to stay for four nights, so I entered the dates on the hotel's online website to check availability for different rooms.  The website also had pictures of the rooms and their views, which made it easy for me to decide.  Since New York has beautiful skylines, I chose a room with a city view that matched the photos perfectly.

The website also listed the available amenities.  We specifically chose the Dominick for its Sisley Spa on the seventh floor.  The spa had a sauna, steam room, Hammam room, and salt chamber, which we tried and found excellent.  You can book the spa at the front desk or through ResortPass for a contactless and seamless experience.

Hotel Check-In

When we reached the hotel, the booking was already in their system, and we didn't need to show any paperwork.  We could ask the concierge for anything we needed, such as check-out time, or use the Expedia app to access the information.

The stay was terrific, and we enjoyed takeout for dinner and watching cable TV.  The hotel's customer service was excellent, and the staff treated us with the same care and attention as if we had booked directly with the hotel.  The hotel offers late check-out and amenities like free morning coffee and business center use.  The front desk staff was friendly and welcoming.

The spa was a highlight of our trip, and we loved the relaxation room with salt lamps and calming music.  The salt chamber was great for respiratory function and skin health, with tiny salt granules circulating in the air.  The hotel had many beautiful places to take photos, including the seventh-floor dining area and the lobby with rotating art displays.

Pros and Cons Booking Hotel Through Expedia

When it was time to check out, we were able to gather our belongings and leave the key at the desk.  We didn't need to open the Expedia app again. Yet we made sure to leave a five-star rating for our stay before coming home to Texas.

Pros:

  • Incredibly easy to use the app and desktop version of the site for hotel research, flight, booking, and reviews afterward
  • Many user reviews help make your decision, in addition to regular star ratings.
  • Able to use rewards points and earn points with every stay, rental, and excursion
  • Your booking is instantly sent to the hotel, so they expect your arrival without any extra calls or paperwork.
  • Option to sort: free cancelation at many locations
  • Option to sort: accessible, pet-friendly, preferred amenities, and more

Cons:

  • Some rates may just be available on the hotel's direct website
  • Recommend confirming with the property just to be certain your booking is ready when you get there

Final Thoughts: The Pros and Cons Of Booking Hotel Through Expedia

Expedia can be a great tool for booking travel online, be it flights, hotels,  vacation packages, cruises, or car rentals.  The website offers an extensive range of options and also has smart search features that help you plan your trip efficiently.  Although there are a lot of reviews for booking hotels online with Expedia, I hope you found this helpful article.

While in New York, we went sightseeing and ate delicious food.  We also bought souvenirs and even some unique gifts for the kids.  We will definitely come back and stay at this hotel, or maybe we will try a new one.
